A number of Herne Hill Harriers were nominated for the Wandsworth Sports Awards 2008 which were awarded at a presentation evening at the Wandsworth Civic Suite on 19 March 2009 rewarding talented local sports performers, coaches, officials, volunteers, teams and clubs for their exceptional achievements throughout 2008.
 
James McDonald won the Coach of the Year Award for his continued efforts in nurtruing a prospering group of talented young athletes while Geoff Jerwood was presented with an award for Voluntary Services to Sport in recognition of the many years he has devoted to Herne Hill Harriers and the sport of athletics in general.

The excellence of some of the club's younger athletes was also recognised. Lascelles Hussey was the runner-up for the Junior Sports Person of the Year Award (for those aged 13 and under) and Katie Snowden was the only athletics representative among those from a number of sports presented with Sports Aid awards and participated in a question and answer session. Jessica Barnes and Zoe Doran formed part of the Under 11 Team of the Year as part of the Wandsworth Mini Games Sportshall Team. Hannah Edwards was one of 6 very high standard nominees for the Sports Person of the Year Award (for those aged 21 and under). 


At the Sports Action Zone Youth Acheivement Awards in Albert Embankment on 5 November English Schools long jump champion Paul Oluyemi won the award for achievement in athletics and Javonique Eka won the award for secondary student of the year. The awards were presented by Linford Christie, Darren Campbell and Christine Ohuruogu. Congratulations to both Paul and Javonique.


Herne Hill Harriers is delighted to have been ranked 10th in the Power of 10 rankings for 2008 after no fewer than 15 of its athletes met the UK standard for their particular age group. This placing is testimony is testimony to the club's committment to youth development and the national success enjoyed by its veteran men's road and cross country team. At a recent meeting of the club’s Executive Committee, the decision was taken to appoint the Reverend Nigel Stone as Honorary Club Chaplain. He is already a HHH member and a local Church of England Clergyman. During the track season Nigel is often to be found on the timekeepers' stand at our league matches and other club meetings, and in the winter at some cross country events.

Further details of this new role will hopefully be included in the next edition of "Red & Black" Magazine, but from now onwards Nigel is available to discuss matters of pastoral or spiritual concern with any club members. Herne Hill Harriers and Wandsworth Council won the Partnership Award presented at the London Regional England Athletics Awards evening held in Westminster on 19 September 2008. Club Secretary Steve Bosley received the award with Ann Marie Ormonde of Wandsworth Council in front of a distinguished audience from the athletics world. The award recognises the link between club and the sports development team as well as the recent development plans for Tooting Bec Track. John Gebbels has been elected as Chairman of the South of England Athletics Association. John has previously been President of the Association as well as being a member of the Committee for several years. He has also been President and Chairman of the Surrey County AA and Chairman of the Counties Athletics Union (CAU).
